2.0 out now
The main new feature is the ability to double-tap on irrelevant notams and they will be hidden in the future.
When you reopen a briefing that contains a hidden Notam, it will say “1 Hidden Notam” in purple at the top.
Can can triple-tap to toggle displaying the hidden notams.
v1.9 out soon
Due popular demand. Submitted awaiting approval from Apple. Also in this release:
- Sartime Alerts
- Better notam highlighting (for sub-activated times in restricted areas).
1.8.2 update – “connection error”
Update 26Jan11 0500h – Approved by Apple. Made ‘for sale’ on app store. Give it a couple of hrs to appear on the app store & then update.
Update: Midday 25Jan11Short version – 95% sure it will be fixed Morning 26th Jan. Doesn’t look like fix will be approved by Apple today, unfortunately.
Long version – I got an email from Apple at 0130h this morning. They have the emergency update but required some additional details since I pulled it from the App store. I emailed back at 0530h (lunch time in California) and they haven’t replied yet. Apparently they don’t work on Sundays either (bummer – it would have been fixed by now).
OPTIONS:
1) Use the http://www.airservices.gov.au/brief website for another day. Clunky & slow, but should do the trick still.
2) Perform a restore from backup from iTunes on your computer. Depending on the date of the last backup, you should have the latest working copy. Then do an update to the (good) version tomorrow morning (Wed 26th Jan – Aus Day).
Once again, apologies for this stuff around. I know how much people use this to make their life helpful & I’ve been hitting myself the last 48hrs over it! I’ve found out its closer to about 100 people affected. Thanks for the guys that notified me ASAP so I could pull it from the app store and prevent more people downloading the broken copy.
—————
Sorry to the 50-60 people that managed to download this update that stopped working. I’ve submitted an emergency bugfix to Apple that should be released very soon (usually its within 24hrs, which would be by end of Sunday 23Jan11, or possibly Mon 24Jan11 if they are slow).
Sorry for the stuff around – hopefully it will be all up and working again soon.
push notifications not working…fixed
For some reason, the feature to be alerted for new weather isn’t working. It tested properly on my own iPhone & iPad however something has gone wrong when submitted to Apple.
I’ve contacted them to see why it isn’t working, and as soon as I find out I’ll fix it & submit an update (1.8.1).
In the mean time – you will NOT get any messages when the weather is updated.
UPDATE – I worked out the problem (it was Apple!). Update should be out shortly (version 1.8.1).
iOS 4.2 breaks flight plan – FIXED 03Dec10!
EDIT: Everybody please update to version 1.8 available on App Store now
For all those having problems with the keyboard on NAIPS when filing a flight plan:
Symptoms
- keyboard does not appear when you try and edit a field in flight plans
Cause?
- iOS 4.2 update changed the way the keyboard works. Sorry I couldn’t anticipate this until a couple of weeks ago.
Solution
- You can avoid upgrading to iOS 4.2 for a couple of weeks
- I submitted a fix to Apple on 18 Nov 10, so it should be released any day now.
- Keep checking the App Store for NAIPS update, then install it.
Update
Edit 12Nov10 Submitted to app store for approval
Working on a few new things coming out soon:
- Printing support
- Push notifications for new weather
- Alarm to remind when sartime about to expire
- Fixed spfib update
- Should work on iOS 3.0 (as requested)
- Fixed Keyboard on flight plan when using iOS 4.2
**NOTE** I’ve had to disable automatic login for a bunch of people. You will need to visit https://www.airservices.gov.au/brief/naipsreg.asp and get your own login. Sorry for any inconvenience…
Push notifications?
I think I may do this next. The concept is you tell naips which airports you want to monitor then quit out of naips and do whatever for the next few hours (fly perhaps!)
When an updated TAF is out, you will get a message on your home screen notifying you of the new TAF. If you click “view”, it will open up naips which will load the new location briefing for that airport.
It will only do TAFs as METARS are already predictable as they come out on the hour. The watch time would be selectable, but around 6hrs (after which time you wouldn’t get any more messages).
I can probably make it give some of the TAF in the message but it will be partially cut off due to a 256 character limit.
Of note: Apple does not provide a 100% garuantee of push notifications to devices so this can not be relied upon, only as a faster way of getting info that you would have otherwise been checking for manually.
Any suggestions or ideas let me know. I’ll start working on it mid-August.
(Edit) Ill also look at implementing the restricted area briefing found on the Airservices website at some stage too.
iPad on it’s way [Update: Approved]
Update 24Jul10: Approved by Apple.
Update 10Jul10: Finished development and submitted to app store. While it wont be winning any design awards, it is fully functional with a similar look and feel to the iPhone version. I’ll be releasing updates in the future that improve the user interface but for now the priority is to get a version out that utilises the ipads full screen resolution.
Apologies to those people not running iOS4 yet, but I have had to increase the minimum requirements to iOS3.2 in order to get it working on iPad. This now means people running OS 3.1.3 etc will need to update to iOS4 to get the latest updates, however their existing copy will continue to run.
Obviously lots of work to get the formatting right on the iPad (redesigning the whole interface for a big screen is a big task). It will be a universal app so you only need to buy it once and it will work on both your iPhone & iPad.
I haven’t forgotten NAIPS!
Update 23Jun10 – Sent in a patch 1.6.1 for Apple to approve. Fixes all of the issues I found with the new iOS4 plus a few other small bugs and improvements. Hopefully it will hit the street before the end of the month.
25May10 - It’s been a couple of months since I’ve done any major updates to NAIPS (mainly because it now has all of the main features on the Airservices website). Also because I’ve been putting most effort into OzRunways.
I’ve been putting a little work into NAIPS making small improvements and fixing a couple of minor bugs. Look out for the following improvements in 1.6.1 soon.
New features in 1.6
Update: 20Feb10 – Approved. Quickest approval by Apple yet (1 day).
Update: 19Feb10 – Submitted to App Store
Highlighting active NOTAMS. You can choose whether they highlight red if active now or for the next 2,6 or 12hrs. Also overhauling the SPFIB system to support submitting (single stage) SPFIB. Will be similar to flight plan/sartime in that you will be able to quickly load/save your own.
